Artificial Intelligence in Education

22nd century is the era of robots.
“Alexa play the music”
“Hey Siri what’s the date today?”
That’s what we do mostly these days. Do you know how Google assistant works? Whatever you speak is well understood by your mobile phone or laptop. Industries are getting automated, even we see small scale machines at home assisting the household.
But what is it? Is it some magic or divine blessing?
Actually it’s nothing but Artificial Intelligence.

In computer science, artificial intelligence (AI), sometimes called machine intelligence, is intelligence demonstrated by machines, in contrast to the natural intelligence displayed by humans and animals. Leading AI textbooks define the field as the study of "intelligent agents": any device that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of successfully achieving its goals. And learning of AI is called Machine Learning, of which Deep Learning is a part. Many advancements have already occurred in this domain. Natural language processing, image processing, text processing, voice detection etc. are some parts of it. We have mathematical solutions to each of it. But now the question is why are we discussing it here? What is the use of AI in Education? We know that in school teacher teaches the student and student learn. There are regular exams and lot of activities happening in school. Also there is school’s administration which handles official work
just like any other corporate. But now the point is that this legislature has been into process since the time school started to be built. So what’snew? The new is Artificial Intelligence
.
The academic world is becoming more convenient and personalized thanks to the numerous applications of AI for education. This has changed the way people learn since educational materials are becoming accessible to all through smart devices and computers.

Switching gears for a moment, I’d like to talk about Duolingo. The language learning app boasts more than three hundred million users enjoying 90 courses in 22 languages. This userbase creates the world’s largest collection of language-learning data – a veritable treasure-trove. And this Duolingo is fastest growing app in China, America and Europe. Already China is the biggest investor in it, but the other two are also stepping in it. So it becomes very important to understand why AI is so tempting.

There are crisp 5 easy applications of AI in Education:
1. Simplifying Administrative Tasks:

AI can automate the administrative duties. Lot of time gets wasted in grading, assessing assignments and in providing feedbacks. This time can be actually used in professor and student interaction. So by using text recognition, we are simplifying the process of evaluating handwritten answers and essays. Also it can be used in classification and processing of paperwork.

2. Smart Content:

Smart content is in trend these days. Digitised textbooks, virtual content, video conferencing, video lectures are hot picks. New learning interfaces are being created to help students of all academic grades and ages. An example of such mechanisms is the Cram101 which uses AI to make textbook contents more comprehensible and it is easy to navigate with summaries of the chapters, flashcards, and practical tests. The other useful AI interface is the Netex Learning which enables professors to create electronic curriculums and educative information across a myriad of devices. Netex includes online assistance programs, audios, and illustrative videos.

3. Personalised Learning:

You must have seen YouTube recommended content. Even you must have noticed Google customised news feed for you. It enhances your interaction and you get what suits you best. What if similar thing could have happened with your curriculum too? We greatly acknowledge that each student has his own abilities. Through AI-powered apps, students get targeted and customized responses from their teachers. Teachers can condense lessons into smart study guides and flashcards. They can also teach students depending on the challenges they face in studying class materials. For example Carnegie Learning.
4. Global Learning:

We have facilities of anywhere, anytime courses nowadays. NPTEL, Coursera, Udemy are few such platforms. AI-powered education equips students with fundamental IT skills. With more inventions, there will be a wider range of courses available online.

5. New Efficiencies:
Automated parking, home automation, automated traffic regulations are some basic day to day improvisations of AI. We can use this for safety of children by making student detection mechanism to find lost students in corridors. AI can be used to create data driven forecasts such as assigning seats during school functions or ordering food from local cafeterias.

Though we are aware that invention and installation of such equipment is a costly process but with time these costs become negligible. A study published by eSchool News indicates that by 2021, the application of AI in education and learning will be increased by 47.5%. Artificial Intelligence might inform the students how their career paths look like depending on their goals thus assisting them beyond academics.
UNISED has caught the flying bird and understood the need of the hour and we believe that academicians need to interact more with students than with the useless paperwork. We are aware of the optimisation of learning for students. So it’s better that we timely adapt to advancements and witness AI in Education. So let’s begin a new chapter at the most innovative school, UNISED International.
